17 Hobbies for Stay at Home Moms

Let’s admit that not all hobbies are for all moms, and some moms have different “free times” than other moms. Working moms, work-from-home moms, single moms, and even stay-at-home moms all have different opportunities to learn and participate in a hobby. For today, we’re going to focus on hobbies for stay-at-home moms – like me.

Hobbies for stay-at-home moms can be a little bit more time-consuming depending on how old their children are. If you’re a stay-at-home mom with kids in school, you can sit down and complete one task for a longer period than a mom with younger kids. Moms with younger kids or kids at home 24/7 will need to have hobbies that can be easily stashed away or paused for kid-caused interruptions.

That’s the main type of hobby we’re going to cover. Hobbies for stay-at-home moms that can either be put away quickly or paused, or can include your kids when necessary.

Creative Hobbies for Stay-at-Home Moms

Creative Hobbies for Stay at home Moms | The Hobby Mom

If you’re not a creative mom or don’t find joy in being crafty, keep scrolling – there are more hobbies for you below! If you are a creative or crafty mom, this section is for you! These are some of the best, creative hobbies that you can dive into as a stay-at-home mom.

Most are pretty affordable and can be picked up and put down as necessary. Here are some creative hobbies for stay-at-home moms:

#1. Crochet

A great option for moms who are good with their hands and enjoy cute little things – like these duck crochet creations – crochet is for you! Crochet is a way of creating things, mainly textiles, by using a hook to interlock loops of yarn, thread, and other materials. In comparison to knitting, crochet is much easier to learn and handle.

If you want to get started with crochet, I highly recommend trying this Cow Amigurumi Beginner’s Kit by Candy Yarn Shop! Sarah Maker also has a great complete guide to crochet for beginners that you can read through too!

#2. Knitting

A harder version of crochet, knitting has a similar concept. Knitting is creating things out of materials such as yarn by repeatedly knotting or looping the material – except instead of using hooks, you use needles! There are two main styles of knitting, the English method, and the German/Continental method.

RJ Knits has a great Youtube series covering how to knit if you’re a visual learner. Otherwise, I recommend trying the Learn to Knit Kit by ThreadBook, it comes with the how-to and all the materials to get started.

#3. Hand Embroidery

Another great option for a stay-at-home mom hobby, hand embroidery! Hand embroidery is creating pictures and patterns by using needlework on a canvas held by a wooden or plastic hoop. You can embroider pretty much anything you want as long as it’s fabric. Hand embroidery is a great option for on the go as you can take your current project with you pretty easily.

There are tons of options for moms interested in learning hand embroidery. If hand embroidery interests you, comb through our round-up of some of the best hand embroidery patterns for beginners!

#4. Baking

As a mom who wishes she had the skills and patience to bake, I would love to support another mom learning and excelling in the hobby. Baking can be a great option for moms who either have a little bit more time or are comfortable introducing their kids to the kitchen. Learning kitchen skills early on in life can greatly help with their developmental skills and confidence.

Baker Bettie has an awesome baking fundamentals series on Youtube to help you get started.

#5. Cricut Crafting

Have you ever heard of a Cricut? It’s this awesome cutting/crafting machine that allows you to create nearly anything you set your heart to. You can make paper flowers, t-shirts, decals, and a ton of crafts that people much more creative than me have made free tutorials for. While a Cricut and it’s materials can be pricey, you can have a lot of fun with them!

We have tons of resources for Cricut crafting on the site! You can check out our cutting files and other ideas here.

Relaxing Hobbies for Stay-at-Home Moms

Relaxing hobbies for Stay at home moms | The Hobby Mom

Not all hobbies need to create something big or spectacular, some hobbies are just there to bring peace of mind and enjoyment. These hobbies are ideal for moms that might not be overly creative but need an outlet to express themselves.

Let’s take a look at some peaceful hobby options for stay-at-home moms:

#6. Coloring

Yes, coloring is definitely a hobby. Coloring is one of those hobbies that you can easily enjoy alone or with your kids. The key is finding a medium and coloring pages/books that you find interesting. For example, maybe you don’t like coloring with crayons in a mandala coloring book for adults BUT you do like coloring with glitter pens in a sarcastic themed coloring book.

If you want to try coloring for adults, we have a free 5-page coloring book printable that you can get access to by joining our email list!

#7. Reading

There’s something about sitting down with a good book that is just so relaxing. Reading is one of those hobbies that you can easily bring with you no matter where you are. You could even listen to books using Audible if you don’t want to carry a paperback around with you. Reading is actually my go-to hobby as a stay-at-home mom of three.

Although I love my real, physical paper books – they’re hard to maintain with three kids under three. I’ve found that investing in the Kindle Unlimited subscription is way easier to keep up with and I get to read as much as I want!

#8. Calligraphy

Calligraphy is a new-ish hobby for me. While my grandmother always wanted to try it and I’ve always found it interesting, it’s a hobby that’s been on the back burner. Still, the basics don’t require as much skill as painting to get a good result and it’s just as peaceful as coloring. Calligraphy is also an affordable hobby to start, which can be a good thing when you’re shopping on a budget.

This DIY beginner calligraphy kit by Wildflower Art Studio is a great one to try! Plus, once you have the equipment, you can find a lot of free calligraphy how-to’s on Pinterest.

#9. Yoga

Although not all forms of yoga are considered “peaceful,” yoga itself is one of the more peaceful hobbies that involve being active. You can do yoga indoors or outdoors and involve your kids of any age! This is a great hobby to get toddlers involved as it can help direct that energy while you get to do something that you enjoy too!

While I have a preference for aerial yoga, it’s a bit hard to do at home. I recommend trying a few morning yoga routines to get started!

#10. Journaling

I’m a huge advocate for journaling. Not only is journaling an awesome hobby for moms, but it’s also great for your mental health. Journaling can be done in any stage of parenting and as any type of mom – not just as a stay-at-home mom. When you journal, you can work on clearing your head and putting your thoughts on paper. Plus, there are even journal prompts that are designed to help you build confidence!

When you’re ready to start journaling, I recommend looking into a good notebook. I know that when I have a visually appealing notebook, I’m more likely to write in it!

#11. Creative Writing

Similar to journaling, but a more creative and less personal experience. Instead of writing or “journaling” about your thoughts and experiences, you’re writing about events and people that don’t necessarily exist outside of your mind. You don’t need to write anything long, just write short paragraphs! If you don’t know what to write about, you can use creative writing prompts.

I’ve always loved creative writing, but the hardest part is figuring out what to write about when you don’t want to write an entire book. The best thing to do is follow a book that offers creative writing prompts each day like these by Britt Writes Books.

Hobbies for Outdoorsy Stay-at-Home Moms

Outdoorsy hobbies for stay at home moms | The Hobby Mom

If you want to start a hobby, but you don’t like staying indoors then these hobbies are for you! Personally, I don’t like going outside in the heat so my time outside is primarily for my toddlers – not me. But these hobbies are still fun and perfect for stay-at-home moms who enjoy being outside!

Let’s look at these awesome hobbies for outdoorsy stay-at-home moms:

#12. Running

Running may or may not be a hobby I ever try, but it’s a great hobby for moms who like to be active and enjoy the outdoors. You can run by yourself or with your kids, but you’ll still be able to have running as your hobby! The great thing about running is that you can essentially run anywhere. You can try running at parks or near home, both have the same result.

I do recommend that no matter where you’re running, you stay safe. Make sure you’re following safe running practices and keeping hydrated wherever you go.

#13. Gardening

Probably one of my favorite outdoor hobbies, gardening is perfect for stay-at-home moms who have yard space. Gardening is another great hobby to get your kids involved in. Depending on where you live, you can plant a variety of your – and your kids – favorite food and snacks. We have a lot of luck with blueberries!

Do your research before you dive in to ensure that any plants that you start are able to grow in your soil and area. Nothing worse than starting a garden that has no real chance of growing!

#14. Hiking

A little bit hard to do depending on how old your kids are, but I’ve seen some mamas take even their babies hiking! Hiking is both a great way to get outdoors and a great way to get away from the house. Most areas will have designated hiking and/or walking trails for you to follow, although they will not all be the same difficulty.

I recommend looking for hiking trails in your area. Don’t forget that you don’t have to do something daily for it to be a hobby, so try planning a hiking trip once a month instead of every day!

Puzzle Hobbies for Stay-at-Moms

Puzzle hobbies for stay at home moms | The Hobby Mom

I have an absolute love for puzzles and brain games, so the fact that you can turn them into your hobby is awesome. In fact, puzzles are some of the easiest hobbies to maintain long-term. AKA they’re timeless! I do have a preference for the classics though.

Here are some of the best puzzle hobbies for stay-at-home moms:

#15. Jigsaw Puzzles

The classic! Jigsaw puzzles are what you typically think of when you want to do a puzzle. While jigsaw puzzles are best done alone, without your kids depending on their age, you can get your kids their own puzzles to do while you do yours! The downside of puzzles is that while you can work on them a little bit at a time, you do have to have a space where they won’t be bothered for awhile.

I recommend starting with a simple puzzle to see if you like them first. This cat plant exchange by Werk Shoppe Studio is a fun one!

#16. Crossword Puzzles

I feel like all puzzles are pretty traditional, they have the “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” mentality. Whatever the case, crossword puzzles are a great way to challenge your brain and enjoy your time. Crossword puzzles are great on-the-go hobbies, so they’re perfect for stay-at-home moms who have to go to appointments often!

Don’t worry, not all crossword puzzles are found in the newspaper. You can use this set of 102 printable crossword puzzles by MrtSVG instead!

#17. Puzzle Boxes

Puzzle boxes, wood puzzles, 3D puzzles… whatever you want to call them, they’re a definite brain teaser. These types of puzzles have become extremely popular lately and I can definitely see why! These puzzles can be solved by moving physical pieces that then unlock the ability to move forward in the puzzle, making it that much more satisfying to complete!

I highly recommend getting this set of six wooden puzzles before diving straight in! These 3D puzzles can get quite expensive depending on the challenge level!
