28 Mom Hobbies to Start in 2024

2024 is the year of starting hobbies for moms – myself included. The question is, what type of hobby should we start? Of course, earning a little extra money can be an excellent motivator for choosing the right hobby, but ideally, you’ll pick a hobby that is actually interesting to you – and not just your bank account (although I’m guilty as charged).

As mamas, hobbies are typically the last thing on our minds. And, depending on which stage of motherhood we’re in, we can be quite limited on the hobbies we can actually do and somewhat keep up with. So, here’s to finding the perfect hobby to start this upcoming year as a mom:

Hobbies for Stay-at-Home Moms

The perfect hobbies for stay at home moms | The Hobby Mom

Let’s kick it off with something simple like hobbies for stay-at-home moms. We’re assuming that you have little time, and if you do have time, that time is shared with kids of all ages running around your house. You might not be able to claim a designated space, so these hobbies can be easily contained and moved.

#1. Blogging

Anybody can blog now! It’s the beauty of having an entire internet at our fingertips. You can blog about anything or everything – from how stressful it is to be a mom to growing herbs on your kitchen windowsill.

#2. Baking

Delicious – and a hobby that the whole family can enjoy. The perks of picking up baking as a hobby are that it produces something that you don’t need to store – just eat. The downside is that if you get really into it, it can get quite expensive.

Find some AMAZING simple baking recipes on our Pinterest board.

#3. Soap Making

There are so many types of soaps out there with varying levels of difficulty. You can make melt-and-pour soap, cold press soap, soap from the kits you find at Hobby Lobby, etc. Soap can also become a lucrative side biz too – just don’t make that the determining factor.

Mountain View Soap Co. is a great example of a soap hobby turned biz.

#4. Knitting

Knitting will never be the hobby for me – I don’t have the patience – but it’s a great hobby for stay-at-home moms! Simply keep your supplies in a designated bag or basket and move them with you when you have a moment of peace and quiet.

You can find knitting guides and tutorials in craft stores and on YouTube.

#5. Candle Making

Best suited for stay-at-home moms with children old enough to know not to stick their hands in hot wax, candle making can be a fun and simple hobby. There are tons of kits online and after some familiarity, you should easily be able to start crafting candles on your own!

Candlescience offers fun regular and holiday-themed candle kits to get started.

#6. Sewing

You don’t need a sewing machine to start sewing! Hand sewing can be just as fun and rewarding as sewing with a machine. Tackle making yourself some shirts or make a dress or tee for your kids.

Sewing is a traditional hobby for moms with tons of free resources.

Hobbies for Toddler Moms

Hobbies for toddler moms | The Hobby Mom

As a toddler mom, you know that peace and quiet – along with any form of alone time – is nearly impossible to accomplish. But, whether you’re a WFHM or STHM, you still need a hobby for yourself. Here are a few simple hobbies that are not time-consuming nor require many materials (and can even be done with your toddler) to consider.

#7. Coloring

Hear me out: coloring is a hobby. With coloring books now vs. what they used to be, they’ve stepped up their game. You can now find coloring books for your favorite reality TV show or coloring books so complicated you have to really think about the colors.

Check out the huge collection of unique coloring books on Amazon.

#8. Cookie Decorating

Sugar cookies and gingerbread are the most popular cookies to decorate, but you can technically decorate any cookie and call it your mom hobby. This one is perfect because you can get your toddler to do it too! Plus, it’s delicious and doesn’t require many new materials.

Learn how to decorate sugar cookies by looking for a local class.

#9. Learn a New Language(s)

Take this opportunity to learn a new language! You’ll be able to write it on a resume in the future, communicate with others, and you’ll be expanding your toddler’s vocabulary as well.

Download an app like Duolingo to get started.

#10. Yoga

Yoga is super interactive for toddlers and can help you both relax and have more patience with each other. Yoga is a great hobby for moms that want to be a little bit healthier and in touch with their bodies.

Do a mom and me yoga like this one from CamiRose Yoga.

#11. Learn to Dance

Another YouTube tutorial favorite – or learn on TikTok! There are SO many styles and types of dancing that you can choose from to learn, and your toddler will love them too! Plus, it’ll get some of their energy out while you’re learning something fun.

Choose from tutorials online or look at your local dance studios for classes.

#12. Coffee

Take it a step further from your normal morning coffee (or evening coffee, no judgment here) and learn how to make different coffee brews! Coffee can be considered an art with all the different ways it can be made.

The best place to find new coffee types and methods is Amazon.

Affordable Hobbies for Moms

Affordable hobbies for moms | The Hobby Mom

I get it, no one wants to break the bank to try a hobby you might not even like – hence our inclusion of the affordable mom hobbies. These hobbies are the ones that have lower upstart costs and lower maintenance costs to help you enjoy your time without emptying your wallet.

#13. Hiking

If you’re adventurous, hiking is definitely an affordable option for a new hobby. I’m not talking about trekking for a few days (although you’re more than welcome to), I’m recommending exploring your local small hikes to get some fresh air.

Hiking paths can typically be found using your local resources.

#14. Photography

You do not need a big, fancy camera to get started with photography. Most iPhones and smartphones are equipped with a camera that has high resolution and quality that will deliver professional photos – you just have to learn how!

I recommend browsing the iPhone photography school on YouTube for tips.

#15. Journaling

Journaling can be so much fun – and very relaxing for most. Journaling is simply writing in a journal or doodling in your journal, you just need to make sure you’re making space for it during the day.

Your local dollar store should have affordable options for journals and pens.

#16. Volunteer

Volunteering is a fun and fulfilling way to spend your time and start a new hobby. You can volunteer at local animal shelters, housing shelters, churches, and even state-funded programs.

This is another one that’ll you’ll need to check your local area for.

#17. Running

Running is a hobby that some moms enjoy thanks to the silence and movement they’re getting. Plus, if you’re a stay-at-home mom, this is a mom hobby that gets you out of your house frequently.

Run your neighborhood, local park, or try a track at the local high school or college.

Beginner Hobbies for Crafty Moms

Beginner hobbies for crafty moms | The Hobby Mom

If you’re a really really crafty mom, you probably already have a hobby. But, if you’re a crafty mom that just has found the right craft – you’re in the right place! It’s hard for new moms and even moms with teenagers to start a hobby that’s considered “crafty.” This is why we’re including just a few easy crafty mom hobbies to try out!

#18. Woodworking

Woodworking is a crafty hobby that allows even beginners to make something cool – and luckily, there are tons of resources for moms to learn online too.

You can find beginner woodworking tools at your local home improvement store.

#19. Bath Bombs

All you need is a good bath bomb recipe and a bath bomb press and you’re good to go! Bath bombs are useful and can be molded into essentially any shape – provided you have the mold to do it. If you get crafty or invested enough, you can even build your own molds with a 3D printer.

The best place to start for recipes is Pinterest!

#20. Crocheting

Crocheting is a hobby that has been around for a long time. While crocheting has a bit of a learning curve, it’s one of the best for creating unique items for yourself and your family. Baby clothes are a personal favorite.

Learn how to crochet for beginners using this Youtube tutorial.

#21. Embroidery

In the past few years, embroidery has become a really unique and fun way of being crafty. With “Oh Shit” patterns and succulents, embroidery creates a trendy craft that you can hang in your house.

Etsy has tons of unique embroidery patterns and kits to choose from.

Hobbies for Introverted Moms

Most hobbies in this list are suitable for introverted moms – but some do require interaction with the outside world. These hobbies are specifically picked to be ones that you don’t even need to leave your house to do, and if you do, it won’t be a busy area.

#22. Reading

I love a good smut series and my Kindle Unlimited has become one of my most used apps on my phone. While I love reading paper books, digital doesn’t get torn up by kids. No matter how you read, reading is a good hobby to have that doesn’t require much social interaction.

Check Facebook for book groups and book recommendations.

#23. Video Games

The Nintendo Switch was designed with moms in mind – whether they realized it or not. The switch is the perfect handheld console that offers games for moms and can be moved to wherever we need to be to get some space.

Try popular games like Animal Crossing and Stray for something peaceful.

#24. Learn to Draw

Another YouTube tutorial hobby that doesn’t require introverts to step out into the world. Order some materials on Amazon and get started with the basics online.

Micheals offers the best materials for you to get started.

#25. Legos

These crafty little build kits are definitely considered a hobby – and a pretty cool one at that. Legos have a mix of everything, so you can find plenty of builds related to your interests (like your favorite TV shows, stuff for your home, etc). The only downside is that the pieces are small so it’s not ideal for moms of tiny ones unless you have a separate space to start.

Get started with Legos by asking for a kit this upcoming Mother’s Day!

Hobbies to Start During Pregnancy

Hobbies for crafty moms | The Hobby Mom

We’re not leaving out the expecting mamas here, in fact, you’re getting your own section! Most – if not all – of the hobbies in the list above are perfectly safe and fine to start during pregnancy. These hobbies are just a few that I found to be peaceful and relaxing while expecting:

#26. Painting

Not only is painting a good hobby for expecting moms, but it’s also a great way to document your pregnancy and your little one after birth. You can make abstract, improve your skills, or paint by numbers.

Look into kits and blank canvases to see what you prefer.

#27. Learn a New Instrument

While an instrument that involves a lot of air (like a tuba) might not be the best to learn at this time, smaller instruments, strings, and pianos are all great options.

Depending on the instrument, you will have a higher start-up cost.

#28. Cooking

Specifically, trying new recipes! One of the best hobbies to start while pregnant is cooking – primarily because you never know what you’ll like and you crave random things. Cooking unique or fun meals can help curb those cravings and make it easier once your baby is born to be in the habit of making a healthy, full meal for yourself.
