Maybe you spend an hour or so coloring each day – or maybe you’re just thinking about it at the moment. Either way, you might be wondering “is coloring a hobby?”
First of all, yes, coloring is a hobby. If coloring is done regularly in your free time or “leisure time” and you enjoy it – it’s a hobby of yours. Secondly, coloring is MORE than a hobby. There are actual health benefits when coloring for relaxation or to de-stress. The type of coloring pages can even play a role in relieving your stress.
There’s a bit more to cover about coloring as a hobby, its health benefits, and where you can find the best coloring pages (it’s not as difficult as you think), so let’s dive in:

Is Coloring a Hobby? Should I Color as My Hobby?
Hobbies are defined as “anything you do in your leisure time that brings pleasure,” which absolutely covers coloring. Therefore, coloring is a hobby. If you’re wondering whether you should take up adult coloring as a hobby, there are quite a few reasons you should – and why you shouldn’t.
Personally, I love coloring, but it all depends on what I’m coloring. Coloring fun or funny pictures is more enjoyable to me than coloring mandalas. If I wanted to color something so complicated and that takes so much time, I would rather spend the time painting by numbers.
Why You Should Try Adult Coloring:
Adult coloring is a rather inexpensive hobby. Most of your supplies can be found at your typical general stores like Target, Wal-Mart, and even smaller places like Dollar General.
Outside of affordability, coloring is a hobby that can be done alone or you can get your kids involved – making it much easier to keep around the house. Toddlers can still be a struggle to focus on one task (like sitting down to color), but in comparison to some other hobbies, it’s not too bad.
Lastly, coloring is great for stress relief and anxiety. And, as a mom, the amount of stress, anxiety, and general overwhelm in my life is ridiculous. If coloring is what helps, then so be it!
Why You Shouldn’t Try Adult Coloring:
Honestly, there’s no significant reason you shouldn’t try coloring as a hobby. The main reason why you might not want to color as your hobby is that you simply don’t like coloring – which is 100% okay. Not everyone is going to like every activity.
Another reason you might not want to try coloring is that you don’t feel you have the space. Being cluttered when coloring can cause it to feel more stressful than it should be. Plus, when your kids take over a majority of your living spaces, coloring might seem impossible.

Why Moms Can Benefit From Coloring
Moms benefit from having hobbies – it’s a fact. Coloring just so happens to be one of those hobbies that have additional, proven, mental health benefits.
Coloring is a healthy way to relieve stress that works by calming your brain and helping your body relax. When you calm your brain and relax a little bit, it improves sleep and fatigue. It can also help reduce your feelings of depression and anxiety.
Choosing to color as a hobby works well for moms as they can start and stop coloring at any point – you’re not required to complete the picture in one sitting. Unlike painting or embroidery, you won’t have materials that could be harmful or messy if left out and a kid gets into it.
Where to Find Adult Coloring Books for Moms
First off, if you’re not interested in purchasing a coloring book, you can find a few FREE adult coloring pages on Pinterest. Free coloring pages typically have to be printed at home and are limited in design.
If you’re looking for a full coloring book, check your local shops like Target, Micheals, and even Hobby Lobby. You’ll typically be able to find a coloring book that either looks interesting enough to try or even matches your specific interests.
When shopping online, I recommend two places: Amazon and Etsy. Amazon has some of the largest variety of coloring books available for adults with independent artist selling and creating new books on the platform daily.
Here are three of my personal favorites that I recommend you check out:
As for Etsy, you’ll find a lot of coloring pages that are unique or niched but are printables. While printables are lower in price, they do require you to print them at home rather than have actual pages delivered to your door.
If you already have a printer, this isn’t much of an issue and can benefit you more in the long run since you can reprint and recolor your favorites. Plus, Etsy carries a more diverse selection of adult coloring page printables.
You can find coloring pages for sarcastic quotes, Disney character portraits, crazy plant homes, and even cute Kawaii coloring pages!
Are you considering coloring as a hobby? What coloring pages do you prefer?
I love colouring! I use it as a therapy for my anxiety and for relaxing. Thanks for sharing your favourite books 🙂
